Money left your account but never arrived: what the rules actually give you
A failed UPI transfer must be reversed by the next working day, and ₹100 a day is owed to you after that — automatically, without your asking. Most people never claim it because nobody tells them it exists.

The screen says failed. The bank SMS says debited. You are now in the most common dispute in Indian retail banking, and there are written rules covering exactly this — including money the bank owes you if it drags its feet.
First: most of these fix themselves
NPCI's own figures show roughly 60% of failed-transaction refunds land within an hour, and the large majority of the rest inside a day. The money is usually not lost; it is sitting in a settlement account waiting for an automated reversal. Raising a complaint in the first hour mostly adds a reference number to something that was going to resolve anyway.
The deadlines the bank is working to
- Person-to-person transfer that fails: the RBI requires reversal by T+1 — the working day after the transaction.
- Merchant payment that fails: T+5 working days.
- Beyond that deadline, the bank owes you ₹100 for every day of delay.
The compensation is the part worth knowing. Under the RBI's 2019 framework on harmonising turn-around times for failed digital transactions, the bank is required to pay it suo motu — on its own initiative, without a complaint or a claim from you. In practice many banks do not, which is precisely why the clause is useful when you have to escalate.
What to do, in order
Wait until the end of the next working day before doing anything beyond taking a screenshot. Keep the UPI transaction ID — the twelve-digit reference in your app's history. Every step after this asks for it.
If the deadline passes, raise the complaint inside the UPI app you paid from, not with the merchant. Every UPI app carries a dispute option against each transaction; that route files it into the NPCI system properly, which a phone call to a helpline does not.
No resolution within 30 days of that complaint, and you can go to the RBI Ombudsman for Digital Transactions at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free, it is online, and banks take it seriously because they have to report on it.
Where people go wrong
- Chasing the shopkeeper. If the payment failed, the merchant never received it — your money is with the banking system, not with them.
- Paying again immediately. If the first payment un-fails, you have now paid twice, and recovering the second one is a slower process than waiting was.
- Complaining to the wrong app. The dispute belongs with the app that debited you, whoever the recipient used.
- Calling a number found through a search engine. Fake helpline numbers for banks and payment apps are among the most reliable frauds in India. Use the number inside the app.
The one that is genuinely serious
If money left your account for a transaction you did not make, this is not a failed payment — it is unauthorised, and the clock is much tighter. Report it to your bank within three working days and, under the RBI's customer-protection rules, your liability for an unauthorised electronic transaction is nil where the fault is not yours. Delay past that window and the limits start shifting onto you.
Timelines and compensation here follow the RBI's framework on failed digital transactions and NPCI's published dispute process. Individual bank policies can be more generous, never less.
